It was an unusually fresh start to the day in parts of the Hunter, with temperatures dipping into single digits this morning.
The doona was needed in Cessnock where it dropped to 7.7 degrees at 6:23am, the coldest morning of summer so far.
Elsewhere the mercury dipped to 8.8 degrees at Cooranbong and 10.3 degrees at Maitland Airport.
The cool temps will make way for a five-day heatwave starting in the Hunter today.
Mid-30's are forecast for inland suburbs today and Friday, while places like Singleton are expecting 40 degrees or higher on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
