Summer is officially over

Ushering in the colder season, this week we've seen the official end to surf life patrolling across our beaches.

Red and yellow flags officially came down on Monday, and won't return until September.

Fifteen beaches in our region are patrolled in the summer months: Avoca, Copacabana, Killcare, MacMasters, North Avoca, Ocean, Shelly, Soldiers, Terrigal, The Entrance, North Entrance, The Lakes, Toowoon Bay, Umina and Wamberal.

Surf Life Saving Central Coast CEO Chris Parker has warned surfers and swimmers to become especially vigilant for ourselves and each other. Without flags, the surf can prove perilous, so we're being told to familiarise ourselves with surf safety techniques, including how to spot a rip in the water.

Over the summer, Central Coast Surf Life Savers managed a record year, saving more than 950 lives across our beaches.
